I am by no means a rabid gamer, but I do enjoy the occasional session of HalfLife 2: Deathmatch. HL2DM is a multi-player, online shoot-em-up. The objective is to shoot as many other players as possible while trying not to get shot yourself.

I’m fairly bad at it. The good players somehow always manage to get the drop on me. They’re just a little quicker on the draw and deadly accurate with their first shot. How do they do it? I’ve wracked my brains for the answer and then I came across this excellent article on How to Choose a Gaming Mousepad! I need to add one of these to my collection.

Mousepad Surfaces

Mousepad surfaces is a fascinating subject all by itself. Coming from a cloth-centric mousepad surface background, it never occurred to me that a different type of surface might be needed for a specialized function. After all, virtually any old mousepad will work for basic, everyday computing. Tasks like word processing, image editing and garden-variety web surfing require no enhanced mouse-handling skills.

However, if you’re using your mouse to center an on-screen reticle on a wildly firing adversary, precise movement and accurate aim could well depend, not only on the type of mouse you are using (yes, there are mouses designed specifically for gaming) but also on the surface of the mousepad.

Gaming mousepads come in a wide variety of types, sizes and surfaces. Most gaming pads have a large surface area, which is a big plus, as far as I’m concerned.  Xtrac Pads offers a full line of pads and mouse accessories.

Gaming mousepads represent a whole separate category of mousepads, examples of which  I need to add to my collection.

I’d love to hear from all you gamers out there. Send me an image and tell me about your favorite gaming mousepad.
